¡Bienvenidos y bienvenidas de nuevo! 

¡Felicidades por haber completado la primera semana del ciclo escolar! Soy Justin Schneider, el presidente de la PTA de la Primaria Becker este año. Mi gran meta para este ciclo es fortalecer la conexión y la comunicación entre las familias de Becker. Espero que me acompañes este año dándole la bienvenida a las nuevas familias y maestros, y recordando los nombres de mamás y papás que quizás has visto por más de cinco años.

¿Para qué existe la PTA?

La PTA de Becker existe para:

1. promover el bienestar de niñas, niños y jóvenes en el hogar, la escuela, lugares de culto y en toda la comunidad;

2. elevar los estándares de vida familiar;

3. abogar por leyes que impulsen la educación, la salud física y mental, el bienestar y la seguridad de niñas, niños y jóvenes;

4. fomentar la colaboración entre familias y educadores en la formación de nuestras infancias;

5. involucrar al público en esfuerzos conjuntos para asegurar el bienestar físico, mental, emocional, espiritual y social de todos los niños, niñas y jóvenes; y

6. promover el uso responsable de los recursos públicos destinados a la educación.

En la PTA de la Primaria Becker, estamos comprometidos con estos propósitos y esperamos que te unas a nosotros en este camino. Aquí abajo te compartimos cómo puedes involucrarte.

Comunicación

La comunicación entre familias, la escuela y la PTA es clave para tener una gran experiencia. Nuestra principal herramienta para compartir eventos, anuncios y mensajes entre familias y maestros es Konstella. Si aún no estás en Konstella, inscríbete aquí: https://www.konstella.com/cd/CRVIV0.

La PTA de Becker se esfuerza por que toda la información esté disponible tanto en inglés como en español. Pero como todos somos voluntarios, gran parte de las traducciones las realizamos con ayuda de herramientas de inteligencia artificial, revisadas por personas cuando es posible. Si ves errores, por favor avísanos.

¿Cómo puedes conectarte?

Únete a la PTA

Cualquier persona puede unirse: mamás, papás, maestros, estudiantes, vecinos, abuelos, dueños de negocios locales. Es el primer paso para involucrarte. Nuestra meta este año es llegar a 272 miembros (aproximadamente la mitad del alumnado). La membresía cuesta $11.50 por persona, y ese dinero apoya tanto a nuestra PTA local como a las de Texas y a nivel nacional.

Sugerencia: Inscribe a toda tu familia de una sola vez para pagar solo una vez el cargo por procesamiento ($1.50).

Participa como voluntario

El miércoles 3 de septiembre organizamos una Feria de Voluntariado de la PTA para que conozcas cómo apoyamos a estudiantes, familias, maestros y al campus. Tendremos café gratis.

También puedes explorar los comités en Konstella, bajo la pestaña “Committees”.
La forma más sencilla de comenzar es llenando el Formulario de Interés para Voluntariado. Una vez que lo llenes, Angela Schneider, nuestra Coordinadora de Voluntarios, te contactará.

Necesidad urgente: aún buscamos a alguien para liderar el Comité de Incidencia (Advocacy Committee).
Este comité apoya los esfuerzos del Distrito Escolar, la Ciudad de Austin y el Estado para beneficiar a nuestra escuela. También identifica oportunidades para abogar por nuestra comunidad en línea con los propósitos de la PTA, no intereses individuales. Por ejemplo, las nuevas señales de alto en Milton y S. 5th St. fueron resultado de la colaboración entre padres y maestros.

Comparte tus ideas y talentos

La PTA quiere apoyar tus ideas para crear comunidad cuando sea posible.
Ejemplo: Unas familias que querían que sus hijos se conectaran sin usar pantallas instalaron un teléfono fijo en casa. La PTA apoya compartiendo la idea para que otras familias se unan. Si quieres formar parte del “directorio del teléfono viejo”, avísanos.

¿Tienes ideas como esta? ¿Te gustaría enseñar una clase de baile para familias? ¿Organizar una partida de Dungeons & Dragons con estudiantes de 4.º y 5.º? ¿Reunir a familias de Pre-K y Kinder para juegos? ¿Hacer intercambios de libros entre 1.º, 2.º y 3.º? ¿Una noche para practicar español todos juntos?

Queremos ayudarte a hacer realidad tu idea.

Apoyo financiero

Austin ISD está enfrentando recortes importantes por la falta de fondos estatales y federales. Se eliminaron más de 100 puestos antes de iniciar clases, muchos de ellos directamente relacionados con las escuelas. Becker también se vio afectada.

Además de organizar eventos y reuniones, trabajamos con la directora Barrett para encontrar formas en las que la PTA puede apoyar al campus. Tu apoyo económico realmente marca la diferencia.

¿Cómo puedes ayudar?

• Tu membresía. De los $11.50, $5.50 van directo a Becker PTA. Mantenemos el costo bajo para que más familias puedan unirse y participar en las decisiones.

• Miembro sostenedor. Puedes hacer una donación mensual. Es fácil de configurar y ayuda a la PTA a planear con anticipación. Una pequeña parte se usa en procesamiento, pero la mayor parte va directo a la PTA.

• Aportación equivalente de tu trabajo. Algunas empresas igualan tus donaciones. Estamos registrados en Benevity para facilitar este proceso.

• Donación única y eventos de recaudación. Tendremos una campaña sencilla en otoño para quienes quieran apoyar sin complicaciones. También estamos explorando nuevos eventos para recaudar fondos. Aunque no dones, ningún evento de Becker estará fuera de tu alcance por motivos económicos.

• Patrocinios de negocios locales. Estamos trabajando para que negocios de la zona apoyen a la escuela. Si tienes o conoces un negocio que podría sumarse, contacta a Rachael Koske: fundraising@beckerpta.org

• Noches de Espíritu Becker. Cada mes organizaremos una noche en un restaurante local que donará un porcentaje de sus ingresos cuando menciones a Becker.

Primera Noche de Espíritu:
Hattie B’s, jueves 28 de agosto, de 4 a 8 p.m.
Ellos donarán el 25% de las ventas cuando digas que estás con Becker.

  Será una excelente oportunidad para conocer el trabajo de la PTA y en qué se usan los fondos. Todos son bienvenidos, pero solo los miembros pueden votar.

• Fall Fest
  La fecha está por confirmarse. Compartiremos más información en cuanto la tengamos.
  Este es el evento anual de otoño para toda la comunidad escolar.

Bienvenidos and welcome back!

Congratulations on completing the first week of the school year. I am Justin Schneider, the PTA President for Becker Elementary this year. My big goal of this year is increase connection and communication among Becker families. I hope you will join me this year in welcoming new Becker families and teachers and remembering the names of parents you’ve seen for 5+ years now.

The purposes of the PTA

The Becker PTA exists to:

1. promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, places of worship, and throughout the community;

2. raise the standards of home life;

3. advocate for laws that further the education, physical and mental health, welfare, and safety of children and youth;

4. promote the collaboration and engagement of families and educators in the education of children and youth;

5. engage the public in united efforts to secure the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being of all children and youth; and

6. advocate for fiscal responsibility regarding public tax dollars in public education funding.

The Becker Elementary PTA is committed to these purposes and we hope you will join us on this journey. Below are ways you can connect and achieve these purposes.

Communication

Communication between parents, the school, and PTA are vital for a great experience. The primary communication tool for events, announcements, and parents and teachers is Konstella. If you are not on Konstella yet, sign up here: https://www.konstella.com/cd/CRVIV0.

Becker PTA is committed to making sure information is accessible in English and Spanish. However, due to all of us being in volunteer positions, most of the translation work is done through AI tools with human review when possible. If you see any errors, please let us know.

Other communications channels, such as BeckerPTA.org, Facebook and Instagram, and the PTA Bulletin Board will be updated less frequently but will still have accurate information posted by the PTA. If you notice anything that is out-of-date, please contact communications@beckerpta.org.

Ways to Get Connected

Join Our PTA

Anyone can join the PTA: parents, teachers, students, neighbors, grandparents, local business owners (and, perhaps, pets). This is the first step in the journey. We have a goal of 272 members (about half of enrolled students). Dues are $11.50 per member, which supports our local PTA, Texas and National PTAs. Follow the link to Join PTA, pull up Austin ISD and Herman Becker Elementary. Pro tip: Add every member of your family in one go to make sure you only pay one processing fee ($1.50).

Get Involved

On Wednesday, September 3, the PTA will host a PTA Volunteer Fair to learn more about the ways PTA supports students and families, teachers and staff, and the campus. We will have free coffee. Learn more about the committees where much of the PTA work is done. You can also learn more about the committees on Konstella under the “Committees” link. The easiest way to get connected is by completing the Volunteer Interest Form. After completing the form, Angela Schneider, Volunteer Coordinator, will reach out to you and connect you with your interests.

One special callout for a need: We are still looking for a chair for the Advocacy Committee. The Advocacy Committee supports and amplifies efforts from the City of Austin, Austin ISD, and the state that benefit our students and our campus. The Committee also explores opportunities to advocate for our community based on the PTA purposes, not individual interests. The new stop signs at Milton and S. 5th St. are the result of parent and teacher advocacy. If you are interested, please email president@beckerpta.org.

Two important things to be aware of right now:

•  Phase 3 Consolidation Survey: What do you love about Becker? Let Austin ISD know. All information about school consolidations can be found at Austin ISD School Consolidations | Austin ISD.

• Our Austin ISD: Share about what you love about public school in Austin ISD. The district and Austin Ed Fund are collaborating to learn about and share your stories about your public school experience.

Share your Ideas and Talents

The PTA wants to support your ideas for connection where possible. Here’s a quick example: A few parents trying to avoid screens but keep their kids connected have invested in getting a landline through their internet connection to get their kids together on an “old-fashioned” wired telephone. The PTA is supporting by sharing this idea and opportunity with other families. If you’re interested in joining the “old phone” directory, let us know!

If you have fun ideas for connection like this, we want to support them as well. What ideas do you have? Can you teach a dance class for families? Do you want to get some 4th and 5th graders together for Dungeons & Dragons? Pre-K and Kinder families for ongoing playdates? 1st, 2nd, and 3rd families for book swaps? Conversational Spanish nights where we all speak in Spanish (as best as we can) together? We want to help make your idea a reality.

Financial Support

As many of you know, Austin ISD is facing significant financial challenges due to cuts in state and federal funding. Before school started, AISD had to cut more than 100 positions, many of whom directly supported the schools. Becker is affected directly by these cuts. In addition to the great events and gatherings put on by the PTA, we are working closely with Principal Barrett to identify ways the PTA can support the school and our students. Your PTA is committed to ensuring your financial support to the PTA will have a direct impact on our school. We have several ways you can support financially:

1. Your membership dues. $5.50 of the $11.50 goes directly to Becker PTA. We want to keep this amount low, so that all of us can access the membership, which allows you to have a voice in the direction of this PTA.

2. Sustaining member. Some people prefer to give through a monthly donation. If you would like to give in this way, it is easy to set up. A small fee goes to processing, but the bulk goes to the PTA. This is a way for the PTA to have a consistent idea on what revenue to expect each month.

3. Employer matching. Some of your jobs may have the ability to match donations you give. We have partnered with Benevity to make sure this opportunity is not missed. Fill out the Benevity information if your employer will match donations.

4. One-time gifts and fundraising events. We do not want to burden you with all of the asks, so we will have a “no fuss” fundraiser in the fall that you can donate to. In addition, we are exploring options for future events that can support raising funds. This is how most people give. However, even if you do not donate, no Becker event will be off limits to you and your family because of money.

5. Local Business Sponsorships. The PTA is leaning heavily into connecting with local businesses to support the PTA. If you own a business or frequent a business that you think might be a good match, please let Rachael Koske know: fundraising@beckerpta.org.

Spirit Nights is a way we are combining 4 and 5 above. We are hoping for one spirit night each month with local restaurants. When you order food at these locations, they donate a percentage of the revenue to the PTA. Our first one is with Hattie B’s on Thursday, August 28, 4 to 8 p.m. They are going to donate 25% when you mention you are with Becker!

Upcoming Happenings

• Spirit Night at Hattie B’s on South Lamar: Thursday, August 28, 4 to 8 p.m. Connect with families, get Nashville Hot Chicken and southern sides, and support Becker!

• PTA Volunteer Fair: Wednesday, September 3, 7 to 8 a.m. near the Texas Garden. Join the PTA, get coffee, find a group to volunteer with.

• First PTA Membership Meeting: The hour before Back to School Night. Our first PTA Membership Meeting will be a great opportunity to connect and hear about the work the PTA is doing. It’s also a great way to learn about what the money is being used for. All are welcome, but only members get to vote.

• Fall Fest: The date is being decided now, and we will share it as soon as possible. This is the annual gathering for the entire school during the fall semester.
